Desert Tech MDR bullpup now fully-ambidextrous

Desert Tech is working on the bullpup everyone’s waiting for, the Micro Dynamic Rifle or MDR. Because of this the company is taking its time to get things right. And when it makes announcements like these, people understand that it will all be worth it.

There are plenty of good reasons to be excited about the MDR. It’s a piston-driven carbine with an adjustable gas system. The MDR uses a quick-change, free-floating barrel system that allows users to convert .223 Remington/5.56 NATO rifle to fire 6.8mm Remington SPC, 7.62x39mm, 300 AAC Blackout and even .308 Winchester/7.62 NATO.

Like other Desert Tech bullpups it has a match-grade trigger that’s expected to be a 4-pound, two-stage trigger that can be user-adjusted down to 2.5 pounds. And up until now, it was merely lefty-friendly.

But this new update will ensure that it’s universally accepted. The Desert Tech team has redesigned the ejection port system to allow users to switch the ejection from the right to the left side and vice versa. The conversion takes seconds.

The MDR still ejects cases forwards, away from the shooter. But this updated ejection system is truly ambidextrous, along with all the other controls.

Future plans include other cartridges like 9mm Luger and .22 Long rifle. The MDR is going to change hearts and minds when it comes to bullpups and Desert Tech knows they have to nail this product launch like none other.

Desert Tech said the MDR will be offered with a variety of barrel lengths for people in places that have overall firearm length or minimum barrel length requirements including California, Canada and Australia.

The MDR is the standard model with a full forend and will launch with 16- and 19-inch 5.56 NATO barrel options as well as 16- and 19-inch 7.62 NATO barrel options. With the 16-inch barrel it measures in at 27.1 inches long and with the 19-inch barrel 30.1 inches long, to comply with various state and international gun laws.

The MDR-C is the SBR chassis with a short angled foregip that by default has a 10.5-inch barrel and an overall length of only 21.6 inches. It too can accept longer barrel assemblies for people who want the SBR chassis with the carbine-length barrels.

While most of these features are evolutionary, taken all together the MDR could be revolutionary. We’ll just have to wait and see.
