One in custody after a report of an active shooter on MSU campus

The Mississippi State University campus at Starkville was put on lock-down after a report of an active shooter Thursday morning.

Campus officials around 10:20 a.m. issued a “Maroon Alert” across its social media channels reporting an active shooter at Carpenter Hall. The historic building, which dates back to 1909, houses the campus’s Mechanical Engineering Department and classrooms.

The alert was followed up just six minutes later with one stating that the “suspected shooter” was in custody.

Campus officials later stated at 10:40 that no injuries were reported and no shots were fired. As of 11:30, school officials were still asking that staff, visitors, and students continue to shelter in place, with an order to resume classes on the 20,000 student campus at 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, students on campus have been tweeting pictures of barricaded doors and what appears to be a suspect, dressed in shorts, in custody with the caption, “He was in my building.”

This is a developing story.

Update 8/30 11:12 p.m.

Officials identified the man taken into custody as Bill Nguyen, a 2014 Madison High School graduate and MSU computer engineering student.

Nguyen advised an Army recruiter that he was having suicidal and homicidal thoughts which in turn led to the active shooter alert from school officials. He did not have a weapon and no shots were fired.
