An unruly patient was shot inside a Houston hospital Thursday after he became violent and combative and attacked two off-duty police officers who were working as security guards in the facility at the time.
Authorities said the 26-year-old patient was being treated when he suddenly turned violent. Security was called in to help subdue the man, but their efforts initially failed.
“He deployed the Taser but it apparently had no effect on the patient,” said Kese Smith, a Houston Police Department spokesman. “He continued to struggle and injured the officers. That’s when his partner discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect.”
The patient, who is expected to survive, was seriously injured, as both officers, with one suffering from a concussion and both having facial lacerations. The officers and the patient were treated in the emergency room and the patient remains in the intensive care unit.
