Michigan drops sales tax on gun locks, safes

The Michigan Senate on Thursday voted unanimously to drop the sales tax on gun safes and trigger locks during the holiday season, the Associated Press reported.

The tax exemption, supporters hope, would encourage gun owners to buy the firearm safety devices as a way to decrease accidental shootings and gun theft, but 60-cents off a $10 trigger lock isn’t a big enough incentive to get consumer cooperation, according to a fiscal committee analysis.

With the backing of firearms industry groups, to include the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Michigan became the fifth state to observe the practice of making tax exempt gun safety devices.

The bill, approved 37-0, was part of a pair of measures introduced by Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker, R-Lawton, in June.
