Amy Schumer pokes fun at prevalence of guns in SNL skit (VIDEO)

A skit that looks akin to shows aired on the National Rifle Association’s short lived Freestyle channel pokes the prevalence of guns in the U.S.

The skit appeared over the weekend on Saturday Night Live with first-time host comedian Amy Schumer, who took up gun control advocacy after a lone gunman opened fire in a Lafayette movie theater showing her film on July 23. The incident resulted in two people killed and nine injured.

The fake public service announcement for firearms shows a collection of seemingly random people who all find a connection with firearms.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence praised the skit and shared a link to the video on its social media pages. “Amy Schumer came out swinging at degenerate gun culture last night on Saturday Night Live,” the group said.

Left-wing publications also took to praising the skit. “The ad shined a light on the absurd notion from gun manufacturers and the NRA that guns will always make us safe,” Salon wrote and called the skit “devastating” for pro-gun proponents.

In a push to prevent future mass shootings, Schumer and her cousin U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer announced legislation in August to motivate states to help plug holes in the national background check system.

The proposed bill will create monetary incentives and penalties for those states which submit or fail to submit pertinent records to the federal system.

“We’re here to say enough is enough to mass shootings in our schools, our college campuses, our military bases and our movie theaters,” the comedian said at the announcement. “These shootings have got to stop. I don’t know how else to say it.”
