Police: Up to 14 dead in San Bernardino mass shooting

Up to 14 people were killed and another 14 possibly wounded after a gunman or gunmen opened fire at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, around 11 a.m. Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan told reporters the incident, which occurred on the 1400 block of S. Waterman Ave., prompted a multi-agency response.

Burguan said that up to three suspects entered building and fired on the victims, who may have been celebrating at a holiday party, but that detail is unconfirmed. The suspects quickly fled after the shooting in what authorities believe is a dark SUV. Police don’t have any information on the suspects and there is no known motive.

The suspect or suspects came equipped with long guns, not pistols, Burguan said, and they came to do what they did “as if they were on a mission.”

An FBI spokesperson during the press conference said he didn’t know if the shooting was a “terrorist incident.”

The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department confirmed deputies are responding to an active shooter situation involving one to three suspects.

Details are still scarce, but authorities asked residents to avoid the area of Orange Show Rd and Waterman Avenue, the sheriff’s department said. “Surrounding area remains VERY ACTIVE. AVOID!” they wrote on Facebook.

Local media reports the specific location is the Inland Regional Center, a medical facility that caters to those with developmental disabilities.

San Bernardino is located to the northeast of Los Angeles County.
