About 120 people gathered in Olathe, Kansas, Saturday afternoon to show support for their Muslim community members.

The event was organized by the Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church and consisted of members of various faiths standing shoulder to shoulder alongside a busy street while holding signs encouraging love, peace and tolerance between all faiths.

“We’re here because we want to counter act some of the hateful rhetoric that is going on recently in the news, counteract with some love,” said Rachel Wathen.

The rally received a great deal of positive feedback with numerous people driving by honking their horns and giving rally-goers a thumbs up.

Maha Abouodah, who attended the rally, is an American-born citizen who is Muslim and, at the age of just 16-years-old, has recently questioned what her future may hold.

“There are those moments in time where you’re thinking, ‘What is my future going to look like? Am I going to be able to go out in public with my scarf on? Am I going to be able to have a normal conversation with some one?'” Abouodah queried.

But Abouodah also said the rally helped to restore a sense a hope.

“Things like this happen and you look to your left and you look to your right and you have people standing there with you and it makes you feel great and it makes you have hope,” she said.
