Almost 60 dogs found shot, abandoned in rural AR woods

Authorities are searching for the person responsible for killing nearly 60 dogs that were found Thursday shot and scattered in a wooded area near Chimes, Arkansas.

Two people from a lumber mill were in the area looking over trees when they made the discovery. Searcy County Sheriff Joey Pruitt said he believes someone brought the animals to the woods, poisoned them, then systematically shot them, but took no care to ensure that they were dead.

Fifty six dogs were found deceased and another – with no hope of recovering from its injuries – was euthanized. John Magruder, shelter manager for the Searcy County Humane Society, over the last few days has tried to round up the few survivors, going into the wooded area with dog food to lure them out.

Sheriff Pruitt said he has been in law enforcement for 25 years and has never before seen anything like this.
