A Jefferson County, Colorado, homeowner made a daring escape and killed a man who was responsible for tying him up in his own home during an attempted robbery Sunday morning.

Authorities say two men responded to a Craigslist ad about some items for sale, but when they met up with the homeowner just after 9 a.m., they pulled a gun on him, bound him, robbed the man, then went to steal his car. However, before the suspects got away, the homeowner was able to get free and retrieve his own gun.

One suspect was in the process of stealing the homeowner’s car, while the second suspect was in an older model gold Ford Mustang. The man opened fire on the suspects, and both immediately fled from the scene in separate vehicles. However, the suspect in the victim’s vehicle had been shot and only got a few doors down before he crashed into a nearby home.

When officers arrived on the scene, the injured suspect was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

The Mustang was found about 20 miles from the home, but the second suspect remains at large.
