A group of five lions took down a massive water buffalo in South Africa’s Mala Mala Game Reserve, and a game reserve ranger caught the stunning takedown, including the moment one of the lions was impaled on the buffalo’s horn.

Altogether, it took the lions about an hour and a half to kill the water buffalo, as reserve ranger Roan Ravenhill, 28, witnessed the unbelievable battle from about 22 yards away. Ravenhill said by the time the fight was over, the lion managed to get unhooked from the horn, but days later he noticed the same lion still limping.

“By a long way, it was the longest battle we have ever seen between lions and a buffalo,” Ravenhill said. “It was hard to watch, but that is the reality of nature.”
