Traffic stop over seat belt leads to arrests over illegal guns

Brooklyn traffic stop

A traffic stop initiated by a police commander in Brooklyn Thursday resulted in the seizure of several weapons and three arrests.

Inspector Joe Gulotta, the Commanding Officer of the 67th Precinct, was on patrol with Lt. John Hopkins when they pulled a vehicle after noticing the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. During the traffic stop, the officers discovered the vehicle was a rental and the driver, nor the other two occupants, were authorized drivers.

The driver was asked to exit the vehicle, and as he did, the officers noticed a loaded magazine and a butterfly knife in the car. Upon further inspection, authorities discovered a loaded .45-caliber handgun in a bag belonging to the woman riding in the back seat. Officers also found a Glock 9mm handgun, as well as a Bushmaster M4 rifle and a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun in the trunk of the car, along with another knife, extended magazines and multiple rounds of ammunition.

Demaris Viera, 19, who was sitting in the back seat, Larry Black, 23, the driver, and Denzel High, 23, the front seat passenger, were all arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
