Peeping Tom sneaks gun into jail, shoots cop (VIDEO)

A Durham police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound after he was shot by a jail inmate during a scuffle Monday morning, and now authorities are looking in to how that inmate was able to sneak a gun into the facility.

The incident occurred around 3:40 a.m. at the Durham County Jail, about two hours after Danny Lee McMillen, 44, was arrested for peeping. As he was brought into the booking area, Officer R.S. Turner, who has been with the department for a little over two years, removed his handcuffs and McMillen immediately reached around to gain access to a gun he had tucked away in his pants.

McMillen and Turner became involved in a scuffle, each trying to gain control of the gun, which was fired during the altercation. Turner was grazed in the abdomen, taken to the hospital for treatment and has already been released.

A .380-caliber handgun was recovered at the jail.
Now, in addition to a misdemeanor secret peeping charge, McMillan is now facing assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon by a prisoner and discharging a firearm within the city limits.

The Durham Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the incident.
