The Fresh Market tells customers ‘no guns’

The North Carolina-based specialty grocer The Fresh Market has implemented a new policy asking customers not to carry “firearms and other weapons” into their stores.
The gun control group Moms Demand Action recently gathered nearly 4,000 signatures in a petition in favor of the grocer’s “gun sense policy.” However, a spokeswoman for The Fresh Market ensured the no guns policy was their own undertaking, a decision that was not due to “pressure from any outside group,” nor one that was taken lightly.
“After examining the issue from many different angles, we feel that this is a balanced policy that is in keeping with our brand and our desire to maintain a safe, comfortable and welcoming atmosphere in our stores, while still respecting the rights of all our customers,” the spokeswoman added.
Business officials feel the policy will “ensure a welcoming environment where our customers and employees feel safe, and treat one another with kindness and respect while shopping and working.”
An informal poll conducted by a local newspaper shows the new policy will not affect the shopping habits of approximately 63 percent of voters, while another 33 percent say it will and the remaining four percent aren’t sure.
