Suspect involved in high-speed chase crashes into fighter jet (VIDEO)

A high-speed chase last week in Lemoore, California, ended with both the driver and passenger being killed after they drove into a naval base and crashed the vehicle into a fighter jet.

The pursuit apparently started when a California Highway Patrol officer noticed the Jeep Grand Cherokee on the side of the road. The officer, believing the couple was having car trouble, pulled over to offer assistance, but before he could check out the situation, the SUV took off in a hurry then started driving erratically.

The officer continued to follow the SUV, until it starting driving the wrong way on the highway. At that point, the officer ceased his pursuit, which was then taken over by a police helicopter. The helicopter kept up with the suspects as they made their way to the operations side of the Naval Air Station at Lemoore.

Soon after gaining entry to the air base, the vehicle crashed into an F/A-18 fighter jet. It’s unclear at this point if the crash was intentional, but authorities have no reason to believe the base was a specific target for any crime.

The female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male driver was initially transported to the hospital, but later died.

Authorities did not say why they believed the couple was fleeing from the police.
