From the opening remarks by James Corden to the voluntary disarmament of the cast of “Hamilton,” the 70th Tony Awards on Sunday was overshadowed by the events in Florida earlier that day.

Saying, “Hate will never win,” Corden opened the annual awards gala for achievement in live Broadway theatre with an emotional one minute speech. “Our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity.”

The hip-hop musical about founding father and first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, picked up 11 wins out of 16 nominations including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Actor. In a show of support for Orlando victims, the troupe left their prop muskets cased for their brief musical performance depicting the Battle of Yorktown, during which Hamilton was an important aide to Gen. Washington.

“Hamilton ” star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, mentioned the events in Orlando in his acceptance speech as did others.

Finally, about 50 protestors from Everytown and Moms Demand Action were on hand outside of the Beacon Theatre in New York where the event was held.
