Retired NYPD cop shoots armed robber in the head (VIDEO)

A 30-year-old man is dead after he attempted an armed robbery in a bar in the Whitestone area of Queens Monday, not realizing that one of the patrons was a retired NYPD cop who was carrying a gun of his own.

Witnesses said the suspect, who was later identified as Andrew McClean, walked into the bar just before 4:00 a.m. and waved a gun around while demanding money from the patrons and out of the cash register. But the former officer, 69-year-old Robert Beardsley, stopped the robbery in progress when he fired a single shot, striking McClean in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighborhood residents say Beardsley, who retired from the NYPD in 1975, is a quiet, yet stand-up kind of guy. Christopher Rusch, whose father’s house is next door to Beardsley’s, said he’s known the former cop since he was a kid and he has always been a nice guy.
