Thermal imaging for smartphones got an upgrade in quality with the announcement of Seek Thermal’s Seek CompactPro. The Seek CompactPro forgoes the standalone camera unit for a small adapter-like device that attaches to any smartphone.

The thermal camera plugs directly into an iOS or Android smartphone for instant thermal imaging on-the-go. Weighing less than 0.5 ounces the adapter features a thermal sensor array of 320 by 240 and 76,800 measurement pixels.

The system measures target temperatures between -40 degrees Fahrenheit and 626 degrees Fahrenheit. The camera offers sensitivity levels less than 70mK as well as an adjustable focal lens. The lens can adjust  to recognize images up to a 600 yard maximum distance with a 32-degree field of view.

The CompactPro utilizes the Smartphone’s ample storage space and sharing capabilities. Pushing images to the smartphone, users can save and share photos and videos. The device syncs with a mobile app available through iTunes and Google Play stores. Loaded with how-tos, thermal alerts and color palettes the app offers a bevy of functions to keep hunters busy on the trail.

Tracy Benson, CMO/VP of Global Marketing for the company, said in a press release that the company has been searching for ways to offer thermal imaging at a more affordable price point

“High performance thermal imaging tools used to be expensive, difficult to carry, and primarily used by few people in military and defense – or those with deep pockets,” Benson said, “Our aim is to fit everyone’s budget and put smart tools into the hands of more people who can really use it, but couldn’t previously afford it.”

The first low-cost thermal imaging system, the CompactPro enters the market at an MSRP of $499.

The use of thermal imaging has exploded in recent years as more shooters turn to feral pig hunting. With roots in over 39 states and averaging over 5 million strong, these nocturnal beasts are quickly becoming America’s newest favorite hunting target.
