An elephant skull that lacked proper ownership papers and documentation was seized on its way through a port in southeast Texas and into Mexico.

A driver from Guadalupe, Mexico, declared the skull on his way through the Anzalduas Port of Entry, about 90 miles west from the Gulf of Mexico, but he did not produce any of the necessary paperwork to export the item, which is required under U.S. and international law.

Agriculture specialists with the U.S. Border Patrol seized the skull and turned it over to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The skull belonged to an African bush elephant, which is protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
