Mayor carjacked in city where Trayvon Martin was shot (VIDEO)

Two teens are in custody for the armed carjacking of the mayor of Sanford, the city where 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in 2012.

Mayor Jeff Triplett was outside of a friend’s home around 2:20 a.m. Saturday when he was approached by three suspects. At least two of the suspects were armed with guns, one of which was shoved in Triplett’s face as the suspects demanded his keys and wallet. One of the suspects reportedly threatened to kill the mayor if he did not comply.

Triplett handed over his keys and wallet, then called 911 as the suspects fled in his newly stolen SUV. An officer on patrol spotted the vehicle and a chase ensued. The pursuit ran through about 20 city blocks before the driver of the SUV crashed.

Two of the suspects were apprehended, while the third remains at large.

Damarcus Paige, 17, and Jermine Horne, 18, were charged with carjacking with a firearm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Horne also faces an additional charge for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Triplett said it was “unnerving” to be the victim of a crime, but praised the Sanford Police Department in their speed and diligence in responding to the crime. He called the actions of the officer “reassuring.”
