Couple who refused to sit by cops in diner get surprise when it comes time to pay (VIDEO)

A tense interaction between a group of police officers and a couple who refused to sit next to them in a Homestead, Pennsylvania, diner over the weekend had an unexpected ending when the couple went to pay their tab.

Jesse Meyers, a server at Eat N’ Park, said when he tried to seat the couple, the male looked at the officers, then looked back at him and said they did not want to sit there. Chuck Thomas, a police officer from Homestead who was with the group that day, wanted them to reconsider.

“I looked over and said, ‘It’s okay sir. You won’t have to worry about it, we won’t hurt you,” Thomas said. “He looked at me hard again and said he’s not sitting here and walked away.”

So Meyers seated the couple across the restaurant and both parties went about eating their lunches. But when it came time for the couple to pay for their meal, they were surprised to discover the group of police officers had already paid it.

On the receipt was written, “Sir, your check was paid for by the police officers you didn’t want to sit next to. Thank you for your support.”

The officers even left a fat tip.

“Essentially the whole goal of it was to let him know that we’re not here to hurt you,” Thomas explained. “We’re here for you. We work for the public. And we just want to better the relationship between the community and the police.”

Then, as the officers were leaving, one of them got a quick smile and “thank you” from the man who, just minutes later, refused to sit next to them.
