71-year-old shot in Chicago while watering lawn (VIDEO)

A 71-year-old man was targeted for an armed robbery then shot while watering his lawn Tuesday in Chicago’s Marquette neighborhood.

Frederico Laguardia was tending to his yard when two young men on bikes rolled up, pulled a gun on him and demanded his wallet. The man refused to hand over his wallet and at that point one of the suspects shot him, then they both took off. Meanwhile, the entire encounter was captured on video by a neighbor’s security system.

Lois Walker, who lives next door, heard the gunshot. When she ran to the front of the house, she saw Laguardia, in a daze, lying on the side of the street.

Laguardia, who suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen, was rushed to the hospital, underwent surgery and is expected to be okay.

Throughout the month of August, Chicago faced its deadliest month in nearly 20 years, then started September with another record-breaking weekend of violence, the deadliest holiday weekend so far this year.

“It’s just absolutely ridiculous,” said Teryeyah Griggs, another one of Leguardia’s neighbors. “You’re not even safe in your own yard.”
