Following hunger strike, Chelsea Manning promised sex reassignment surgery
Chelsea Manning, the Army private serving prison time for sharing sensitive military information, took to eating once again after a week-long hunger strike over not getting the sex reassignment surgery previously promised. Manning, who was born Bradley, has since been promised the surgery once again.
Manning expressed frustration over the government dragging its feet, but said in a statement she is “unendingly relieved that the military is finally doing the right thing,” adding that all she ever wanted was just “for them to let me be me.”
At this time, there is no definitive date set for the male-to-female surgery.
Manning, who was sentenced to serve 35 years in a military prison, was previously involved in a lawsuit over access to hormone treatment while in prison, which the Army agreed to provide at an approximate cost of $50,000.
Following an announcement that transgender people would no longer be banned from serving in the military, the Pentagon announced that they would also provide medical treatment, including sex reassignment surgery, for transgender troops at an estimated cost of $2.4 million to $8.4 million, per year.
