Neighboring county invites gun show kicked out of fairgrounds to new home

A historic gun show that has put on over 100 events in the past three decades in the same venue only to be refused future dates after protests from a gun control group now has an offer from lawmakers one county over.

The Saratoga Springs (New York) Arms Fair, a semi-annual gun show now in its 33rd (and likely final) year, was the subject of heartburn from a local group who termed themselves Saratogians for Gun Safety for the past couple years.

Even though in 2013, U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, along with New York Attorney Gen. Eric Schneiderman, visited the show and held it an example of compliance with the state’s new SAFE Act gun laws, the Arms Fair is being told that there are mysteriously no dates available for the show to book in 2017 or 2018.

Now, lawmakers in a neighboring county voted unanimously to send the Arms Fair an invite to bring their event to a new location there.

“Many gun owners from Rensselaer County patronize the gun show, and we think the show would continue to be a success if it relocated to this county,” Legislator Leon Fiacco told The Saratogian.

County officials noted that Saratoga Springs never had a safety issue with the event and it is a valid tourist attraction.

“We are unaware of there ever being an incident or safety issue at the Saratoga gun show,” said Legislator Thomas Walsh Sr. “The Second Amendment has many followers here in Rensselaer County, and the unanimous vote shows we are potentially a good home for the event.”
