IN officer teaches lesson in empathy by getting down on little kid’s level

Indiana police officer Precious Cornner-Jones was participating in a “High Five Rally” at School 88 last week when something unexpected happened.

The rally is intended to uplight students by giving them a “high five” as they enter the school, but one little boy obviously needed a little more to brighten his spirits.

“This little fella was having a rough morning and fell out on the floor,” Cornner-Jones explained in a Facebook post. “I saw his mother step back and look. She stated this is how he is expressing himself lately.”

So what was Cornner-Jones’ reaction?

“I decided to get on his level and talk to him,” she said. “He started to cry so I wiped his tears and told him it will be ok.”

Cornner-Jones went on to explain her simple yet brilliant reasoning.

“As an adult sometimes all we want is one person to stop, get on our level and maybe wipe our tears. These children are entitled to bad days just as us, so give them that moment to bring it together,” she said.

Cornner-Jones then encouraged others to “get on someone’s level” to help them smile, noting that you could be the one to give them hope and spread peace and love.
