Florida felon gets five years in prison for gun possession

A Florida man will spend five years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon, the Justice Department announced last week.

A federal jury convicted Michael Kelly, 29, of Largo, Florida, in June of felony possession of a firearm.

According to court documents, FBI agents executing a search warrant at Kelly’s home found a loaded Taurus PT1111 semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9mm along with 150 rounds of ammo.

Kelly, who was arrested in October 2015, has prior felony convictions including possession of a sawed-off shotgun and aggravated assault. Federal law prohibits felons from possessing firearms.

U.S. District Judge Susan C. Bucklew sentenced Kelly to five years and 10 months in federal prison.
