Wheelchair-bound teen ‘stands’ for American flag; Short rant about anthem ensues

Arek Trenholm

Sixteen-year-old Arek Trenholm, of Florida, has spina bifida, which has robbed him of the use of his legs, but that didn’t stop him from “standing” before the American flag earlier this month.

As the local high school’s ROTC color guard marched down the street during a homecoming parade, Trenholm used his arms to pull himself up into a standing position as a show of respect.

Trenholm’s uncle, Myron Leggett, in turn, seized the moment to shame those who refuse to stand for the National Anthem.

“To all of ‘Those’ that refuse to stand for the Flag of the United States of America……….. this is my nephew Arek Trenholm, he has ‘spina bifida’ he used his arms to ‘STAND’ from his wheelchair as our Flag passed by!! He will never be able to ‘play’ football, if he could, he would ‘Stand’ as the flag passed or when the ‘National Anthem’ is played. Take a lesson!” Leggett wrote in a Facebook post.

The post had since been shared over 1,000 times and more than 300 comments commend the teen for his actions.
