Passerby stops to assist state trooper being attacked on highway (VIDEO) WBBH News for Fort Myers, Cape Coral & Naples, Florida

For the second time in just over two weeks, a good Samaritan stopped on Florida’s I-75 to help a law enforcement officer in need.

Jeffery Duclos, who happens to be a veteran and retired Rhode Island police officer, was traveling on the highway in Collier County when he noticed the Florida Highway Patrol trooper being attacked by two suspects. Dulcos, fearing the trooper might not go home that night, pulled over and intervened.

“I think the kid saw me coming, so he basically surrendered,” Duclos said.

The trooper pulled over Richard Lazo Torres and Isaac Ruiz Wilson after he clocked them at driving over 100 miles per hour, but after pulling to the side of the road, Torres and Wilson switched seats in an apparent effort to hide the fact that Torres was driving on a suspended license.

As the officer talked with Torres and Wilson, they became increasingly hostile and resisted arrest, until they eventually both attacked the trooper. Soon thereafter is when Duclos, who spent 30 years in law enforcement, happened upon the scene.

Last month another good Samaritan, who was carrying a legally concealed handgun, witnessed a Lee County sheriff’s deputy being attacked on the same highway. The armed citizen stopped to assist the deputy and fatally shot his attacker, Edward Strother, after he repeatedly refused to get off of the officer.
