The town of Bunker Hill, Indiana has a quiet and empty police department after a run in with town leaders rubbed the town marshal and his four officers the wrong way, leaving the local sheriffs department with the task of enforcing the law in the municipality of some 900.

Blaming the town board for asking them to “do illegal, unethical, and immoral things” and citing the fact they had to share one set of body armor, the whole police department quit.

The officers claim they were asked by town leaders to run criminal background checks on other board members, then threatened when they refused.

“We have had issues with the town board and there are some activities there where I felt like they were serving their own agenda,” said former Bunker Hill Town Marshal Michael Thomison, who contends the town council changed him from full to part-time status to escape from paying his mounting insurance costs over an ongoing battle with cancer..

Worse, Thomison says they were forced to swap out a single set of body armor among themselves.

In a statement sent to Fox 59, the city refuted those allegations, saying:

The current town council as well as prior councils have, on occasion, had disagreements with Mr. Thomison over a number of things. These disagreements have primarily been caused by the lack of funding available to the town to invest in the police department. However, the council denies that it has failed to provide body armor for the marshal or reserve deputies. The council is well aware of Indiana law on the topic and has complied with it fully. Further, the council absolutely denies that it has ever asked Mr. Thomison or any of the reserve deputies to be involved in any illegal, unethical or immoral actions.
