A massive explosion Tuesday at a fireworks market in Tultepec, Mexico, claimed the lives of at least 29 people and left more than 70 injured.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene as smoke billowed from the market square, but firefighters had little choice but to simply wait for the fireworks to stop exploding. The explosion could reportedly be felt in neighboring towns.

Tultepec, which is about 25 miles north of Mexico City, is home to a well-known pyrotechnics industry and generally thought to be one of the safest markets in the region. Due to the holiday season, the market, which is about the size of a stadium, was likely very crowded.

The incident remains under investigation, but authorities are not yet sure what caused the explosion.

Of the 70 injured, three juvenile victims are expected to be transported to a Galveston, Texas, hospital for treatment of what is being described as extreme burns.
