Spokane officer pulls woman from burning car (VIDEO)

A Spokane police officer’s body cam captured dramatic footage that shows him pulling a woman from her car as it became engulfed in flames Friday night.

The woman placed a call to 911 around 10 p.m. saying that her car was on fire and she was trapped inside. She was unable to open the door because the vehicle’s electronic locking system had been disabled, presumably by the fire. And while she tried to break the window, she was unsuccessful.

Officer Tim Schwering was the first to arrive on the scene and could see the woman still desperately trying to break the window.

Schwering grabbed his baton and went to work, repeatedly striking the glass until it broke enough that it could be pulled away. Still unable to open the door, Schwering, with the help of a nearby neighbor, pulled the frantic woman out of the broken window and to safety.

By the time the fire department arrived, the engine compartment of the woman’s car was completely engulfed in flames and part of the bumper had melted away.

The woman was treated and released by paramedics at the scene and the neighbor treated for a minor cut received from the broken glass. Schwering was transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
