NRA front and center at Trump SCOTUS meeting

The National Rifle Association made it clear Wednesday the gun lobby is behind President Donald Trump’s pick for Supreme Court.

Ahead of a yet-to-be-scheduled Senate confirmation hearing for federal appellate Judge Neil Gorsuch, Trump personally thanked NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre at the beginning of a strategy meeting at the White House. LaPierre, seated prominently to the president’s left, was first to introduce himself to the press, possibly solidifying his organization’s importance to the Trump administration.

“The NRA has been with this President from the beginning,” LaPierre said in a statement emailed to “He’s made an excellent choice. We’re going to do everything in our power to see him confirmed.”

Democrats have threatened to filibuster the president’s nominee, to which Trump replied Republicans should work fast to block those efforts.

“If we end up with that gridlock I would say if you can, Mitch, go nuclear,” Trump said, referring to Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell changing a rule requiring a Supreme Court nominee receive 60 votes to a simple majority.
