Georgia lawmakers file bill to allow concealed guns on campus

Georgia lawmakers filed a bill Tuesday intended to allow gun owners to carry firearms on public college campuses.

Filed by Republican Rep. Mandi Ballinger, the legislation would allow anyone with a concealed carry permit to carry concealed handguns on public college campuses in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Though a full text version of the bill was not yet made available, 15 members of the Georgia House of Representatives have reportedly cosponsored the bill, according to the Associated Press.

Republican Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed a similar bill last year, saying that universities were “sanctuaries of learning” in which guns have not been allowed.

This version of the bill reportedly exempts child care facilities from the spaces in which guns would be allowed, which was a concern Deal had with last year’s version of the bill.
