A 17-year-old boy is dead after he snuck into his girlfriend’s home over the weekend in Grovetown, Georgia, and was shot by the girl’s father, who mistook the teen for a burglar.

Major Steve Morris with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office called it “an unfortunate incident.”

According to local media, the incident unfolded just before 3 a.m. Saturday morning when the girl’s father, later identified as Derrick Fulton, heard some noises in the downstairs portion of his home. Fulton grabbed a gun from his dresser, then walked downstairs where the family’s dog was repeatedly barking.

Fulton made his way to the guest bedroom where he heard noises and yelled out that he had a gun and whoever was there needed to identify themselves. Fulton received no response, so he again, for the second time, yelled out for the person to identify themselves. Still, there was no response.

As Fulton opened the bedroom door, 17-year-old Jordan Middleton leaped out of the closet and Fulton, believing Middleton to be an intruder, fired a single shot, striking the teen in the chest.

When police arrived on the scene a short time later, they found the father performing CPR on Middleton in an effort to save him. He was transported to an area hospital but soon thereafter succumbed to his injuries and died.

Neither the father, nor his daughter was injured.

Investigators learned Middleton was invited to the home by his 14-year-old girlfriend and after sneaking into the house, the girl’s father heard them.

Fulton has not been charged and Morris says he is still in shock and very remorseful. Morris said the investigation will probably take about a week for them to complete and at that time, it will likely be handed over to a grand jury.
