Trump: 'I now have responsibility' for crisis in Syria (VIDEO)

President Donald Trump, during a Wednesday news conference with Jordanian King Adullah II, condemned the recent chemical weapons attack in Syria, saying it was now his responsibility to deal with the ongoing crisis in the war-torn country.

“Yesterday’s chemical attack, a chemical attack that was so horrific in Syria against innocent people, including women, small children and even beautiful little babies, their deaths were an affront to humanity,” Trump said from the White House Rose Garden.

“These heinous actions by the Assad regime cannot be tolerated,” Trump continued. “The United States stands with our allies across the globe to condemn this horrific attack and all other horrific attacks, for that matter.”

Trump then answered questions on the attack, and said it was now his administration’s responsibility to deal with the atrocities in Syria, attempting to clarify a statement issued yesterday that blamed former President Barack Obama for not doing more about the crisis.

“I now have responsibility, and I will have that responsibility and carry it very proudly,” Trump said. “It is now my responsibility.”

While Trump accepted responsibility, he still maintained the Obama administration could have done much more to intervene, saying, “it was a great opportunity missed.”

Leaders around the world condemned the attack Tuesday that reportedly killed numerous civilians in the northern Syrian province of Idlib, including many women and children, CNN reported.

Witnesses said toxic nerve agents and possibly other banned chemicals spread after planes bombed the area, causing people to writhe in pain and foam at the mouth. Humanitarian groups said as many as 100 people had died from the attack.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s military blamed the rebels for the attack and denied using any chemical weapons, while Russia claimed to have no warplanes in the area.
