Traffic stop leads to gang members with guns, body armor (VIDEO)

Two gang members were jailed over the weekend, and the attentive sergeant with the Salt Lake City Police Department who arrested them may have thwarted a robbery.

The sergeant was in a 7-Eleven just after midnight Saturday when he saw a man acting suspiciously. The man made eye contact with the officer then quickly walked out of the store and to a parked car across the street where a second person was waiting.

The car took off and the officer, believing their behavior was odd, followed the vehicle and stopped them on a traffic violation. As the officer approached the vehicle, he could see a handgun under the driver’s leg. At that point, the officer drew his service weapon and called for backup.

A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded gun and six full magazines. One of the suspects was also wearing body armor, but he claimed to have stolen the body armor and gun from an apartment.

The suspects, 25-year-old Shawn Manymules and 21-year-old Brandon Luna, were arrested on possession of a firearm by a restricted person, obstruction of justice and theft by receiving stolen property. Both suspects are documented gang members.
