Washington officer blinded by gunfire finishes 5K

A police officer with the Mount Vernon Police Department in Washington completed a 5K Saturday in Bellingham despite the fact that he was blinded after being shot in the line of duty last year.

With the help of a friend, Officer Mike McClaughry crossed the finish line of Fun with Fuzz 5K, a moment which was captured and shared via Twitter thanks to the Bellingham Police Department.

After serving more than 30 years on the force, McClaughry, 60, was shot in the back of the head Dec. 15, as he responded to a call about a shooting. The officer was left blinded by the shooting and is still undergoing treatment. But McClaughy said the community has really rallied around him and his family since his injury.

β€œIt’s overwhelming,” he said. β€œIt really is.”

Three suspected gang members have since been arrested and charged for the shooting.
