Virginia man facing cocaine charges pleads guilty to illegally buying firearms

A Virginia man plead guilty Tuesday to illegally buying firearms while under indictment for cocaine possession.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Virginia, 28-year-old Anthony Fernandez Medrano was indicted in 2015 in Virginia state court for cocaine possession.

While still under indictment, Fernandez Medrano illegally bought guns from a private party and signed bills of sale related to those purchases.

He will be sentenced in federal court on Aug. 11 and could face a maximum penalty of 5 years imprisonment, though the U.S. Attorney’s Office notes that sentences are usually less than the maximum.

Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; and Michael B. Boxler, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) Washington Field Division, issued the announcement after the guilty plea was accepted by Senior U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton.
