Aiming to honor the 6,758 service members lost in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, a veteran and art student in Texas has made a 3D flag from spent brass.

Houston Baptist University student Jeremiah France is a senior studio art major in HBU’s School of Fine Arts and has been working on the piece since last fall. He put over 450 hours of work into silver soldering the brass using .45 caliber casings for the stars and alternating .40 caliber and 9mm casings for the stripes. There also looks to be 5.56mm cases on the edges.

β€œOne piece of brass in honor of each American who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan,” says France.
