Spanish version of ATF Form 4473 posted for comment

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has announced that it is translating its background check form into Spanish, a process that requires the agency to post the form for comment.

The ATF Form 4473, which the agency says will be no different than the version that took effect in January 2017, will be available for comment for the next 60 days.

The agency hopes the Spanish version of the form will help Federal firearms licensees better deal with clients whose native language is Spanish.

The new form that took effect earlier this year had more than 50 changes compared to the older version, including an addition of the definition for “fugitive from justice.” That added definition came after a 16-year dispute between the ATF and FBI, which led to the transfer of more than 2,000 guns to accused criminals from 1999 to 2015.

Other changes to the form included changing the term “gender” to “sex,” and a warning regarding federal laws that prohibit marijuana use.
