Man shoots at unsuspecting drivers on Florida expressway

A 36-year-old man is in police custody after he started shooting at random cars on a Miami expressway early Monday morning.

The gunfire erupted around 1 a.m. as Horvin Ruiz struck at least two vehicles on the Palmetto Expressway with an AK-47.

Officers with the Miami-Dade and Doral police departments responded to 911 calls along with the Florida Highway Patrol. Ruiz’s burgundy Toyota Corolla was spotted and appeared to lose control and hit a center median after a short chase. Ruiz was then surrounded by the responding officers and engaged in a shootout before surrendering soon thereafter.

Yellow evidence markers were left scattered at the scene, marking an unknown number of shell casings. Miraculously, no one was injured by either Ruiz’s gunfire or the subsequent shootout with police.

Authorities have not released a possible motive for the shooting, but the incident remains under investigation.
