Felon indicted for carrying gun into Kansas City federal courthouse

A Kansas City man has been indicted for illegally possessing a firearm he carried into a federal courthouse while allegedly high on PCP.

According to a Justice Department news release, 42-year-old Joshua D. Hughes, a convicted felon, carried a Sig Sauer .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun into the federal courthouse on May 26, 2017.

The affidavit specifies an officer noticed Hughes was impaired as he walked into the lobby of the U.S. District Court. The officer suspected Hughes of being under the influence of PCP.

Hughes, carrying a black backpack, then walked up to the court security officers and told them he was a “felon in possession.” Officers then frisked Hughes and found the loaded handgun in his boxer shorts.

While running Hughes’ backpack through an x-ray scanner, officers noticed several items they thought to be contraband and so opened the backpack to conduct a search. In the backpack, they found a bottle of  suspected PCP.

Hughes was then arrested and transported to a local hospital to treat his impairment.
