A Florida man was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition while being a convicted felon.
Ronald Stephenson, 44, was sentenced as an Armed Career Criminal due to multiple prior felony convictions for violent crimes and drug offenses, according to a Justice Department news release.
Court documents specify that in May 2016, Stephenson was arrested after assaulting and threatening to kill his girlfriend. Law enforcement officers discovered a loaded .22 caliber pistol that Stephenson had hidden under a bedroom mattress.
Stephenson pleaded guilty to the crime on Feb. 10, 2017, and was also ordered to forfeit the firearm he illegally possessed.
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case.
