Chicago: 6 killed, 14 wounded in 19 hours

Chicago saw the bloodshed continue this week, as 6 people were killed and 14 more wounded in a 19-hour stretch from Thursday to Friday morning.

The Chicago Tribune reported the first fatal shooting during the 19-hour stretch occurred at 7:45 p.m. on the southwest side. A 24-year-old man was on the sidewalk when he was shot several times by someone in a passing vehicle. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The latest fatal shooting took place Friday at approximately 2:45 a.m. in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s south side. Parked on the street, officers found a car that was still running and inside found a 25-year-old man who had been shot in the head. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jermont Montgomery and Jerrell Harris, two men who live in the Chatham neighborhood, said the block in which the shooting occurred is usually peaceful and so didn’t think the crime was random.

Both men work with local nonprofit organizations aimed at slowing violence in the city and both called for a more community-based approach to solving the problem.

“You can pass the toughest gun laws in the world and put police on each block,” Montgomery said. “It will not make a difference. It’s an issue of a community that needs to be healed.”

According to Chicago Tribune data, 1,924 people had been shot in Chicago through July 9, compared to 2,113 people at the same time in 2016.
