Sig Sauer Academy building cover over berms after investigation into stray bullets

The Sig Sauer Academy is planning to build a covering over sand berms for its shooting ranges located near Route 101 in New Hampshire after a state police investigation showed that bullets were landing on the nearby highway.

The Union Leader reported the town of Brentwood has approved a permit for the building project, and Brentwood Building Inspector Kip Kaiser said the company has already gotten started on building the protective structures.

Five of the eight shooting ranges in the area will receive the coverings. While the academy is located in both Brentwood and Epping, only the ranges on the Brentwood side were determined to need extra safety measures.

Sig Sauer announced plans to build the safety structures in a June statement after the New Hampshire State Police unveiled findings of an investigation that started in April when a woman’s windshield was struck by a bullet on Route 101 near the academy.

“The Sig Sauer Academy is fully operational and running regularly scheduled classes and events. The Sig Sauer Academy would like to thank the New Hampshire State Police for their professionalism and the thoroughness of their investigation,” the company said.

“In April, the Sig Sauer Academy voluntarily suspended normal use of the ranges adjacent to Route 101,” the company continued. “Since then, a structure has been designed that will provide additional safety measures and is currently under construction.”

From the investigation, police concluded the bullet that hit the woman’s windshield more than likely came from the academy but that it could not have been fired at the time the woman was driving. Investigators also reportedly found several rounds on the road.

Lt. John Hennessey noted at the time that Sig Sauer officials had cooperated fully with the investigation and were taking steps to prevent further incidents.
