Armed woman asks 911 operator if she can shoot funeral attacker

A South Carolina news station obtained an audio recording Monday from a 911 call placed moments after a man intentionally plowed his Cadillac into a crowd of mourners during a funeral at a Columbia cemetery earlier this month.

More than half a dozen 911 calls came in concerning the incident at Greenlawn Memorial Park, but one of the callers was armed with a gun.

“I have my gun — do you want me to shoot him?” the woman asked the dispatcher.

“No, you can’t shoot him, ma’am,” the dispatcher replies before gathering additional information about the incident from the caller.

Police eventually arrived on the scene and apprehended the suspect, James Kester, who remains jailed with a $5 million bond on 12 counts of attempted murder.

Investigators later learned that Kester was upset with the Department of Mental Health over previous treatment of his daughter. It’s believed that Kester targeted the funeral of Margaret Livingston after reading in her obituary that she retired from the Department of Mental Health. Kester was not acquainted with Livingston, nor did she have any ties to Kester’s daughter, who was killed in a house fire last year and buried in the same cemetery as Livingston.
