78-year-old man wanted to spend the rest of his life in prison, so he robbed a bank (VIDEO)

A 78-year-old career criminal was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday for robbing a Reno bank last year with a steak knife.

According to the defense, Tommy Ray McAdoo, who is homeless and suffers from heart and kidney disease, robbed the bank not so much for the monetary reward, but rather as an opportunity to spend the remainder of his life in prison.

“All I can say is I’m sorry,” McAdoo said in court before taking a pause. “Patsy Cline had a song, ‘I’m So Sorry.’ And that’s what I am now.”

Failing hearing forced McAdoo to listen to the court proceedings through a headset.

“He was just freezing and scared, and prison is a world he’s familiar with,” defense attorney Lauren Gorman explained. “He instinctively did what he knew would land him back there — he robbed another bank.”

But U.S. District Judge Robert C. Jones indicated that he still sees McAdoo as a public threat. In fact, McAdoo has an extensive criminal history dating back more than 50 years. His convictions include multiple bank robberies, assault with intent to commit murder and intent to commit rape.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Rachow said of the case, “It’s tragic we are at this point,” adding, it’s “because of steps the defendant has taken. He reported to parole and probation that he wants to return to prison. He cannot function in society.”
