G2 Research, best known for its R.I.P technology, is adding a new round to its ammo lineup this Fall, announcing a 12 gauge self-defense slug.

The all brass 303-grain individually machined CNC slug is 0.725-inches in diameter, about a quarter inch larger than a .50 caliber bullet according to the company. G2 equipped the slug with the R.I.P. design, causing the round to release six large metal petals, or trocars, into the target upon impact.

G2 says the six trocars spread through targets delivering 9 to 11-inches of penetration, while the .70 caliber base continues forward for another 5 to 6-inches. The round offers an approximate velocity of 1,430 feet per second depending on barrel length.

The ammo doesn’t come cheap, with a five round box setting shotgunners back $49.99.

“This 12 gauge round is very specific in its design and mission; that of a person defending his life and/or that of his family. The real question is how much value we put on put on our own life or that of those we are protecting,” Mike Nickerson, marketing director for G2, said in a press release.

The ammunition is designed strictly for self-defense and does not accommodate rifling, compensators, chokes or modified barrel cylinders. G2 warns that the only type of barrel that can be safely used alongside the ammo is a smooth bore riot type shotgun barrel.

No word yet on exactly when the new shotgun ammo will drop.
