US Marine arrested for bullet found in bag at Okinawa airport

Naha Airport

A United States Marine is facing charges after security officials at Naha Airport in Okinawa found a single bullet in his rucksack Friday.

Cpl. Aaron Swicegood, 25, was taken into custody around 9:20 a.m. and released the next day. His case was turned over to the Naha District Public Prosecutors Office and he will be charged for violation of the country’s swords and firearms control laws.

Swicegood, who is stationed at Camp Hansen, was on his way to Tokyo to reach his final destination in Los Angeles when the incident occurred. The soldier told authorities he wasn’t sure where the bullet came from, but assumed it was dropped in his bag during a trip to the U.S., possibly when he went to the gun range with his father.

Authorities are unsure how the bullet previously got through airport security undetected.
