Texans who lost their handgun licenses due to Hurricane Harvey can now replace them for free, Gov. Gregg Abbott announced Tuesday.

In an effort to help lighten the financial burden for Texans recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, the governor has directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to give out free replacement License to Carry a Handgun cards and Private Security Board licensee cards for all Texan residents who lost them due to the historic storm.

“As Texas begins the recovery process, we are prepared to respond to a wide range of issues to help victims of this Hurricane,” Abbott said in a news release. “By eliminating burdensome fees to replace these important licenses, Texans can focus on rebuilding their lives and communities.”

All residents living in Texas counties that were included in the gubernatorial disaster declarations and who currently hold a LTC or PSB license will be eligible to receive free replacements. A complete list of the eligible counties has been posted to the governor’s website.

All eligible license holders should call the Regulatory Services Division contact center at 512-424-7293 in order to get the fees waived, as the service is not available online. Those eligible will have to provide proof of identity to waive the replacement fees, which would normally amount to $25 for LTC cards and $15 for PSB cards.

A DPS spokesman told The Texas Tribune on Tuesday that the department did not yet have an estimate of how many Texans had lost licenses due to the hurricane.
