On Friday the firearms giant formally announced its new compact polymer pistol, which compares well to the Glock 19.

After weeks of teasing through distributors and social media that the new M&P 2.0 Compact was in the works, the direct contender to the well-liked Glock available in 9mm and .40 S&W was made official Friday and company leaders acknowledged the rivalry.

“The M&P M2.0 Compact pistol series bridges the gap for those who want a single firearm for professional use, personal protection, carry, or practice at the range,” said James Debney, president and CEO of American Outdoor Brands Corporation, in a statement. “We believe the new M&P M2.0 Compact series will be sought after by consumers whose purchase option in this category has, until now, been limited primarily to the Glock 19 or 23.”

Going through the specs, the Compact uses a 4-inch barrel and has a 15+1 round capacity in 9mm and 13+1 in the .40 variant with an unloaded weight of just under 24-ounces. This is a dead ringer in comparison to the Glock 19 and 23 and a hair lighter than the 26-ounce P-10 C series from Czech gun maker CZ.

Other features on the Compact include an accessory rail, four interchangeable palm swell grips, stainless slide with an Armornite coating, and an 18-degree grip angle. The gun ships with two magazines and a pair of mag extension sleeves for using full-sized magazines. MSRP on both models is $569, though retailers will likely have it for less than that. Smith advises the guns are in stock and currently shipping.

Guns.com is testing and evaluating an M&P Compact 2.0 for a future review.
